Since ancient times, people have been drawn to competition. In the first century A.D., thousands flocked to Rome to witness gladiators fighting to the death in the Colosseum. In modern times, the violence has dwindled, but the impact competition has on society is still present. This past February, it was reported that 800 million people around the world watched the Super Bowl on TV. Professional athletes dedicate their whole lives to achieve success in their sport.

Shuffleboard was something that I could hardly spell, let alone play. But that’s just me. For a Romanian photojournalism student, the game was as foreign as the name of my country’s capital, Bucharest, would be for any average American. To most MU students, this game is as close to a “pastime” as you get in a dingy bar around here. Columbia is not famous for bar games. There are only a few places where people can play shuffleboard.

As their routine reaches a crescendo, the dance students of Stephens College float blissfully through the air, appearing to defy the principles of gravity without effort. The close observer, however, will notice the their breath quickening as they pirouette, leap gracefully and dance gracefully.
