St. Louis boxer arrested on traffic violations, cleared in altercation charge

ST. LOUIS - St. Louis-born boxer Cory Spinks was arrested on traffic warrants, but video surveillance from a baby store cleared his name on more serious allegations, police said Wednesday.

St. Charles County authorities were called to a home on Monday where a woman alleged she had an altercation with Spinks. Spinks denied it.

In the course of interviewing Spinks, police ran a record check and realized the 30-year-old boxer had outstanding warrants on two traffic-related charges - failure to have an insurance card and driving without a license. He was arrested.

Spinks posted $300 bond and was released.

Meanwhile, Spinks told authorities he was at a Babies"R"Us store in Chesterfield at the time of the alleged altercation. Authorities contacted the store and looked at video surveillance, which confirmed his story.

"That was the alibi he gave. Sure enough, there on the video was Cory Spinks walking out of the store with a significant other," St. Charles County Lt. Dave Tiefenbrunn said.

The accuser later admitted she made up the altercation story, Tiefenbrunn said. An investigation continues, but she could be charged with filing a false report.

Spinks grew up in St. Louis and now lives in St. Charles County. He is the son of former heavyweight champion Leon Spinks and the nephew of another former heavyweight champ, Michael Spinks.

He lost his most recent fight against Verno Phillips in a 12-round split decision in March in St. Louis. The loss cost him his IBF junior middleweight title.

Spinks is 36-5 overall with 11 knockouts, but 2-3 in his last five bouts.

Spinks did not have a listed telephone number and could not be reached for comment.
