Coast Guard says fuel spill clean-up finished in Missouri River

ST. LOUIS — The U.S. Coast Guard said a clean-up effort was successful after a towboat named the Omaha began sinking and spilled diesel fuel in the Missouri River.

The Coast Guard said the clean-up effort used a vacuum truck and a skimmer to remove a majority of the fuel that was spilled.

It’s still not clear how much diesel fuel was spilled into the river. That won’t be known until the boat is removed from the water and its fuel tanks are examined.

The towboat held 22,000 gallons of diesel when it began sinking in late May. No one was injured.
