NORTH KANSAS CITY — A routine arrest at a North Kansas City casino early Sunday morning quickly escalated into a fight involving dozens of people, police said.

North Kansas City police Sgt. John Stark said two officers were called to the VooDoo Lounge in Harrah’s casino at about 1:45 a.m. to quell a disturbance and were attacked when they tried to deal with a woman involved in the dispute.

Stark said other patrons in the bar joined in the fracas and that the two officers suffered minor injuries. Police said that although there were 450 people in the bar at the time, only about 25 people were directly involved in the fight.

Police backed off until officers from other law enforcement agencies could arrive to help quell the disturbance. Five people were later arrested.

Numerous casino employees and patrons also received minor injuries.

Casino officials declined to comment.
