COLUMBIA — The Boone County Sheriff’s Department arrested two girls, ages 12 and 13, in connection with a fire in a south Columbia duplex that caused $15,000 in damage.

The two suspects were arrested Friday and charged with trespassing and knowingly burning or exploding, according to a news release from the Boone County Fire Protection District. Both girls were referred to juvenile authorities.

The April 26 fire occurred on the living room floor of 301 Catherine Drive. “When we entered the residence, we knew right then it was a suspicious cause,” said Division Chief Gale Blomenkamp. “We knew early on what we were dealing with.”

Blomenkamp said cooperation between the Sheriff’s Department and the Fire Protection District, as well as tips from the public, led to the arrests.
