Splishin' and splashin' at Stephens Lake Park's new sprayground

Monday, May 5, 2008 | 10:11 p.m. CDT
Water shoots up out of the ground, soaking 4-year-old Kylie McKay at Columbia’s unique new water park which opened to the public Thursday. The “sprayground” at Stephens Lake Park features 7,000 square feet of water elements.

CORRECTION: This article has been updated to correct the size of the sprayground.

Two-year-old Eric Lancaster Jr., right, seeks refuge from the watery attraction by shrouding himself with a towel in one of the park’s drier areas. Development for the sprayground at Stephens Lake Park began in 2007.
Sixteen-year-old Berlyn Seitz, far right, fixes 17-year-old Cody Anthony Jr.'s hair while Alyssa Reynolds, 16, relaxes in a tree Monday afternoon at Stephens Lake Park. The three are students at South Callaway High School in Mokane and were in town on a class field trip.

With every new addition, the Stephens Lake area becomes more artificial and less natural. Please, City of Columbia--stop developing it. It's not a pool, its not a water park--it's a natural lake in a lovely green space. If you want a cement-covered, fake water park, please create it somewhere else.
