Aftershocks continue in the Midwest

WEST SALEM, Ill. — The number of aftershocks linked to last week’s earthquake has grown to more than two dozen.

The U.S. Geological Survey says 26 aftershocks have been centered in Illinois since last week’s 5.2-magnitude temblor. Its epicenter was near West Salem, in the southeast part of the state.

The latest aftershock — reported as a magnitude 3.7 — occurred today at about 12:30 p.m. near Bellmont, Ill.

There are no reports of damage or injuries, although some residents reported feeling today’s aftershock.

Two of the aftershocks have measured at least a magnitude 4.0. Most have been closer to 2.0.

Seismologists say aftershocks can continue for days or months depending on the region or the geology.

Many of the aftershocks go unnoticed by people without specialized measuring equipment.
