Senator: Limit travel's ties to insurance rates

JEFFERSON CITY — Senators today endorsed a measure limiting the ability of life insurance companies to deny coverage or to hike rates based on a person's travel plans.

Sponsoring Sen. Scott Rupp says some Missourians have been denied life insurance policies because they planned to vacation in certain parts of the world. He says some insurance companies, for example, view Israel as dangerous.

The legislation given initial Senate approval today would prohibit insurers from denying coverage or charging different rates based on a person's past or future travel destinations. It would create an exception for insurers that could prove there was a greater risk in going to a certain place.

Several states have passed similar measures.
