COLUMBIA — Boone County residents can expect some relief from heavy rains Tuesday afternoon, but the rain will continue throughout the morning, according to a National Weather Service meteorologist.
Boone County remains under a flood watch until this evening.
The county was pummelled with heavy rains, totaling between 1 to 2 inches in a 12-hour period, and in some areas, there was light hail.
Meteorologist Benjamin Sipprell, with the National Weather Service in St. Louis, said that storms in central and west-central Missouri should move south and east this afternoon, causing rains to move out of the Boone County area.
Storms, which began Monday morning, were expected to cause precipitation of about 3 inches on average, with some isolated areas receiving up to 5 or 6 inches of rainfall.
The storm had already caused 10 road closings throughout Boone County by 9 p.m. Monday, and a flood warning was issued for the county.
Saturated ground and heavy rains were two main factors that caused flooding around the roads.
Chuck Mastalski, Joint Communications shift manager, said. “It’s a lot of rain in a short period of time.”
The National Weather Service recommended that as these conditions continue throughout the morning, residents should be wary of areas inundated with water, especially when driving.
“It takes only 2 or 3 feet of water to lift a car and move it,” Sipprell said.
Sanborn Field at MU showed that 1.47 inches of rain had fallen just before 9 p.m. Monday.
Missouri is experiencing more rain than average for the year. It has rained 8.06 inches from Jan. 1 to Sunday, 5.46 inches more than the average 2.60 inches.
But as the week continues, Boone County residents can expect things to lighten up.
“After that we’ll see drier weather moving in and sunnier conditions,” Sipprell said.
