PrintCOLUMBIA — A revision to the city ordinance dealing with private common collectors will be read at the City Council meeting for the first time tonight without opportunity for discussion or public comment.
There will be a public hearing on the revision at the council meeting on March 17.
The private common collector tax bill ordinance was revised at the council’s work session on Feb. 25.
According to the existing ordinance, residents on private common collector sewer lines are billed 50 percent of the total cost to replace a line.
If the revision is passed, the city will focus on smaller private common collector projects instead of large areas at one time. By focusing on smaller areas, the city will be able to maintain current expenditures even without tax billing.
“It is probably going to be cost effective for both the city and the residents. The present policy is both burdensome for the city and the residents,” Fourth Ward council representative Jerry Wade said. “It’s cheaper for everyone. Not often do you get to make that kind of a policy change.”
