COLUMBIA — The cats and dogs of Columbia Second Chance were dressed to impress Saturday.
The animal shelter hosted “A Formal Affair,” an event to encourage adoption of black dogs and cats.
- Columbia Second Chance hosted its first annual event, "A Formal Affair," on Feb. 16 and 17. The event showcased 10 black dogs and 10 black and white cats that were up for adoption.
- 11-month-old Holly, a Golden Retriever/Labrador Retriever mix, looks out from her fenced-in area while another interested customer chats with Julie and Kyle Crossman. Volunteers described her as a "lovable, goofy dog."
“Black dogs and cats tend to go the slowest, so that’s why they get their own special day,” said volunteer Christina McCullen.
Those in attendance were treated to hors d’oeuvres and punch before meeting the furry guests of honor. Many of the animals were dressed in fancy, colored collars decorated with ribbons, beads and tinsel.
The cats, who inhabit their own room at the shelter, were dressed for the occasion in colored crocheted collars, made by one of the volunteers, to make it easier for potential adopters to tell them apart.
“I think the turnout’s been fabulous,” said volunteer Laura Brenner. “We didn’t know how much food to buy. It’s been hopping all day.”
As of 4:30 p.m., two of the shelter’s 10 cats, along with one dog, had been adopted, McCullen said.
Oliver, a 5 month old Labrador Retriever, quickly captured Julie Crossman’s heart.
“I’m a convert. I grew up a cat person, but now I love dogs too,” Crossman said.
“A Formal Affair” will continue from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Columbia Second Chance is located at 205 E. Ash St.
