Coumbia — The Hickman Kewpies (12-13) defeated the Northtown Hornets (15-8) 76-61 to win their third straight game and five out of six.
The Kewpies knew they had a big challenge on Saturday facing 7-foot tall Hornet center Garrett Stutz, who is signed to play basketball at Wichita State next year.
“We knew it was going to be a tough task tonight, but he had to work to get his points. I’m really proud of our effor tonight,” said Hickman coach Kenny Ash.
Senior Tyler Stevens who stands at 6-foot-6 and had the challenge of guarding Stutz, said although he is shorter than Stutz that he tries to not let that phase him.
“I don’t care how tall he is, I’ll bang around with anybody of any size,” said Stevens. “It was a little intimidating at first, but as the game goes along you forget about the heighth.”
“I thought Hickman had a great game plan in regards to how they tried to play Garrett Stutz,” said Northtown head coach Jim Hinrich . “We just didn’t adjust very well and when he went out, our offense had trouble scoring.”
Stutz had 28 points on Saturday but was limited in playing time because of foul trouble, due in large part to Stevens.
“It was huge to get him off the court. He can’t hurt us if he is not playing,” said Stevens.
Senior John Reese, sophomore Lyle Harris and Stevens each had 16 points for the Kewpies.
Hickman’s next game will be the opening round of the district tournament at 7:30 against Smith Cotton on Tuesday night at Rock Bridge high School.
