Cari Gibbs, Heidi Wilcox and Katie Mendez take a plunge into 30 degree water in the name of the Missouri Special Olympics. The Polar Bear Plunge, held at Stephens Lake, was the first central Missouri plunge.
Sergeant Tim Moriarity performs CPR on a stuffed polar bear he had taken into to the lake hidden under his jacket. Sergeant Moriarity wore his official uniform unlike the rest of the participants, who wore costumes. The Special Olympics fundraiser was hosted by Columbia Police Department.
Firefighters Danny Spry and Walt Goodman, in their mustang suits, deliniate the area of Stephens Lake where the participants ran into during the first Polar Bear Plunge. The participants raised money for the Special Olympics. Columbia Fire Department had cleaned the ice off the lake to ensure the safety of the participants.
