COLUMBIA — You could tell who was shopping for a Super Bowl party in Columbia on Saturday afternoon just by glancing at what was piled in each person’s cart:

Tostitos

Jars of salsa

Velveeta cheese

A can of Rotel

Ingredients for Rotel dip, made with Velveeta cheese, a can of Rotel tomatoes and maybe beef or sausage, seemed to be the most popular buy at the Wal-Mart on West Broadway.

Along with chips, salsa and Rotel dip, shoppers were also buying beverages and vegetable trays for Super Bowl Sunday.

At Wal-Mart, Steve Downes said he planned to make turkey chili and nachos, and to serve beer, soda and maybe Margaritas.

Asked about his party plans, Downes said he was “staying home and having friends over.”

Donna Clayborne said she intended to stay home and watch the game with her significant other.

“I’m doing fajitas and a dip and Rotel,” she said.

Jamie Diggs also was going to stay home with his family and have a few friends over.

He said he would be putting together “Rotel, nachos, a vegetable and fruit tray. Chili, also.”

Pam Ogles, who had all the ingredients for Rotel dip in her cart, said she wanted to make it because “it’s a great Super Bowl thing.”
