COLUMBIA — A traffic accident on Providence Road near Turner Avenue on Monday morning left a woman seriously injured, police said.

According to a news release from the Columbia Police Department, Brittany Waid, 21, of Columbia, was driving south on Providence around 4:30 a.m. when her black Ford Focus struck a curb, then a chain link fence. The car drove up a hill and flipped when it collided with a tree.

Waid was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, the release said. She was transported to University Hospital and admitted into the Intensive Care Unit. Although Columbia Police Sgt. Tim Moriarity was unsure of the driver’s current status, he said that she was still undergoing treatment as of 12:30 p.m. Monday.

According to the release, it is suspected Waid had consumed alcohol. However, police won’t know for sure until the test results come back, Moriarity said.
