Linda "Darlene" Sutton
COLUMBIA — Linda “Darlene” Sutton of Columbia was a happy person who had passion for swimming.
“She just loved being in the water all the time,” Stacey Uptegrove, her daughter, said. “She had a pool put in at her house and would swim every day.”
Mrs. Sutton died Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at University Hospital. She was 57.
She was born on April 23, 1951, in Columbia to Alberta Edwards and Lewis H. Sutton Sr. They both died earlier.
Mrs. Sutton graduated with honors from Moberly Area Junior College in 1985. She was a member of the American archaeology department at MU and retired in 2006. Mrs. Sutton served for two years as the treasurer on the Boone County Historical Society board.
Family and friends will remember Mrs. Sutton as a “water-baby” who loved sharing her swimming pool with her family and friends.
“She loved going to the ocean, the lake,” Uptegrove said. “She just loved being in the water.”
Mrs. Sutton is survived by two sons, Daryl Sexton of Republic and Shawn Sexton of Columbia; a daughter, Stacey Uptegrove of Columbia; a sister, Barbara Sutton Baker of Columbia; a brother, Lewis H. Sutton, Jr. of Fayette; several grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her step-father, Lawrence E. Morton; sister, Pat Benzenhoefer-Prailey; brothers, Ronald Wayne and Donald Dewayne White; and step-brother, Gaylord Morton died earlier.
Her children will remember her for always being there for them whenever they needed her.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 West. The Rev. Kristen Powell will conduct the services. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Memorial Funeral Home. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, 1900 N. Providence Road, Columbia, MO 65203.
